Warcraft II: The Dark Saga for PlayStation is a console version of the classic RTS, released in 1997 and based on Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness along with the Beyond the Dark Portal expansion. Blizzard brought the entire package to console and reworked it, while keeping the spirit of the original intact.
The story unfolds in the world of Azeroth, where the Orcish Horde and the Human Alliance wage a brutal struggle for resources and survival. The campaigns for both factions include dozens of missions, revealing characters and key episodes of the great war.
Gameplay is genre classic: base building, resource gathering, recruiting troops, and planning tactics. Your faction choice affects unit rosters, buildings, and spell sets, adding variety and encouraging experimentation with different approaches.
Visually, the PlayStation version does a solid job of conveying the Warcraft II style: recognizable unit and building sprites, neat animations, and clear readability on a TV screen. The audio is traditionally strong as well—epic music and punchy effects reinforce the atmosphere of battle.
Controls are adapted for a gamepad, letting you comfortably issue orders, select groups, and work with the interface without a mouse. As a result, Warcraft II: The Dark Saga became a successful console RTS—an excellent way to dive into the battles of Azeroth for those who prefer playing on PlayStation.
